How safe is Lima in 2022? Is there an increase in violent crime?

Lima is one of the best cities in the world to visit and enjoy life. The city is relatively safe and living here should not be any different from living in other large metropolitan cities such as London or New York City. In fact, Lima has seen a decline in violent crime rates over the last 5 years with reported incidents decreasing by 24%. This can be attributed to better policing, more police presence, and improved infrastructure.

Due to the pandemic Lima is under an emergency order for increased violent crime.  The police may stop anyone and search them.  Miraflores and San Isidro are largely isolated from the emergency order and are very safe.  The area around the airport and Callao is relatively unsafe for foreign nationals.  In most areas you will need to wear a mask (or two) and produce your vaccine card to enter some establishments like large grocery stores though this could be relaxed in the future.  Be sure to check current guidelines, laws and regulations.
